The best time to visit is from September to April. November is the time for the Autumn Carnival at Temi which welcomes the first bloom of the cherry trees... The cherry blossoms are associated with the Buddhist notions of change and transformation and here in Sikkim they herald the onset of winter.
Sikkim, situated in the north east of India, is a land of untouched, natural beauty. Tucked away in a corner of the Eastern Himalayas, this state offers the searching traveler a rich and diverse experience of peace, adventure and cultural immersion all at the same time.
Mountains are often considered the abodes of deities. The mighty Kanchenjunga dominates a large part of the state's skyline. Easy day trips from Temi can be arranged to Gangtok, Ravangla and Namchi. Darjeeling is a 3 hour drive away, as is Pelling.
A trip to Sikkim is the experience of a lifetime, for which one must be aware of the permits and other formalities. The RAP is a 30-day-long permit and is also referred to as the ILP, or Inner Line Permit, for tourists of foreign origin. The permit can be collected easily from the Sikkim Tourist Office in Siliguri or Sikkim House in Delhi and Kolkata. The whole process is speedy; it takes thirty minutes maximum and is free. You are required to have your Passport and Visa photocopies and two passport-size photos.
Permits for specific locations, when required, can be organised with the help of tour operators. RAP (Restricted Area Permit) is a special document required by all foreign nationals entering Sikkim. Indian nationals do not require any permit except in high security areas like Tsango, Nathula and certain parts of North Sikkim.
Always carry your travel card, as you may have to produce it before enforcement. Do also remember that all protected regions are 'no swimming' zones and that smoking and drinking in public places, tourist places, and religious grounds are strict no-nos. Even the noise level has to be low to maintain a relaxed environment.
