Permits & Formalities

A trip to Sikkim is the experience of a lifetime, for which one must be aware of the permits and other formalities. The RAP is a 30-day-long permit and is also referred to as the ILP, or Inner Line Permit, for tourists of foreign origin. The permit can be collected easily from the Sikkim Tourist Office in Siliguri or Sikkim House in Delhi and Kolkata. The whole process is speedy; it takes thirty minutes maximum and is free. You are required to have your Passport and Visa photocopies and two passport-size photos.

No permits are required for Indian tourists to enter Sikkim, but there are some particular spots where they are needed—Tsango, Baba Mandir, Nathula, and North Sikkim. They can easily be organised through most tour operators without any hassles. You need a photocopy of your passport, voter ID, or driving license, along with the original copy. Note that Aadhar and Pan Cards are not accepted.

Always carry your travel card, as you may have to produce it before enforcement. Do also remember that all protected regions are 'no swimming' zones and that smoking and drinking in public places, tourist places, and religious grounds are strict no-nos. Even the noise level has to be low to maintain a relaxed environment.
